Bagley Named HWHSD Board President

At the monthly meeting held Monday night, Andrew Bagley was named President of the Helena-West Helena School District Advisory School Board.  Doug Friedlander was named Vice-President and Bettye Hendrix was appointed as the secretary.

Andrew Bagley
Bagley, a Social Science Instructor at Phillips Community College and former World History teacher in HWHSD, has served in a wide variety of volunteer capacities supporting the Helena-West Helena Public Schools.  Bagley is the Secretary of the Helena-West Helena Booster Club and is the Voice of the Cougars for football and basketball on KCLT-FM 104.9.  Bagley is also a member of the Eliza Miller Primary PTO and his step-grandson Gabriel attends the 1st grade there.

Bagley was honored by the selection.  He said, "I am honored to be selected for such an important position supporting the Helena-West Helena School District.  I believe that the future success of our community is inextricably linked to the success of the Helena-West Helena Schools.  As a resident of this community and a lifelong supporter of public education, I plan to lead by example and give all that I can to make our schools better and the pride of our community.  I ask others to follow me by doing the same."

Bagley continued, "While many challenges remain, these are exciting times to be a Cougar and a public school supporter.  We have made great strides in recent years and I believe that we will continue to improve.  I would not hesitate to recommend our schools to any parent or guardian living in HWHSD."

Friedlander is the Executive Director of the Phillips County Chamber of Commerce and has been quite successful in reinvigorating that organization.  He is a former science teacher in the Helena-West Helena School District and a board member of the Boys and Girls Club of Phillips County.

Hendrix is a former teacher in the Helena-West Helena School District and a board member of the Helena Health Foundation.  She is a long-time leader in the local business and philanthropic community.

In other business, the board approved changes to the 2013-14 calendar to make up snow days.  The last day for students will now be June 4.  The last day for teachers will be June 6.  The 2014-2015 calendar and the pay schedule for the 2014-2015 school year was also approved.
