LITTLE ROCK- The Pulaski Academy Bruins (5-0, 2-0) had 15 points and 164 yard in offense on its first two plays as it broke the game open early on the way to a 50-28 victory over the Helena-West Helena Central Cougars (2-3, 1-1).
On the game's first play from scrimmage, Bruin Quarterback Will Hefley hit Will Hastings on a 77-yard touchdown pass. Tre Bruce ran in the two-point conversion to put Pulaski Academy up 8-0 just 14 seconds into the game.
After the Cougars had to punt, Hefley hit Cameron Colbert for an 87-yard touchdown pass. Hastings kicked the PAT to make the score 15-0 with 10:06 to go in the first quarter.
After the Cougars failed on a 4th down play at their own 46, the Bruins needed three plays to score. Hefley hit Bruce from 15 yards away for the score. Hastings kicked the PAT to make it 22-0 with 8:00 to go in the first quarter.
The Bruins then recovered an onside kick and got a late hit penalty to get the ball on the Cougar 28-yard line. Six plays later, Hefley hit Zack Kelley for a 14-yard touchdown pass to make it 29-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Pulaski Academy added one more score in the first half to push the lead to 36-0 when Hefley found Bruce again from 15 yards away. Hastings added the PAT and the mercy rule was in effect for the entire second half.
The Bruins pushed the lead to 43-0 when Jack Hansen scored on a 12-yard run to cap off a six-play, 33-yard drive. Hastings added the PAT with 7:30 to go.
The Cougars scored the next 28 points. Curly Brewer threw a 22-yard TD pass to Keith Hays with 35.7 seconds left in the third quarter.
With 9:27 to go, the Cougars took advantage of a 4th down stop and Hays scored on a 21-yard run. Keon Demp added the two-point conversion to make the score 43-14.
Then Tionate Williams got an interception for the Cougars that turned into a 26-yard scoring drive capped off by a 5-yard touchdown run from Hays with 6:58 to play to make it 43-20.
On the next possession, the Cougars forced a rare Bruin punt and Anthony Lewis returned it 45 yards for a touchdown with 4:54 to go. Hays passed to Keyshawn Simpson for the two-point conversion to make it 43-28.
After the Cougars tried an onside kick, Pulaski Academy went back to Hefley who found Kelley for a 4-yard touchdown pass to cap off a 3-play, 39-yard drive. Hastings capped off the scoring with the PAT to make the final 50-28.
