LITTLE ROCK- At Monday's meeting of the Arkansas Board of Education, Department of Education Commissioner Dr. Tom Kimbrell named an Advisory School Board for the Helena-West Helena School District.
Kimbrell had the responsibility to name the advisory board under a new state law that passed in the most recent legislative session in addition to a law that lengthened the time the Department of Education would retain control of the district to five years. The advisory board will meet monthly and provide input on a wide variety of matters. The names selected came from lists submitted by state legislators who represent all or parts of the Helena-West Helena School District. The individuals had to have the recommendations of legislators pursuant to the law, which was drafted by State Senator Linda Chesterfield-D Little Rock.
Zone 1 will be represented by PCCUA Chancellor Dr. Steven Murray. Zone 2 will be represented by retired PCCUA Vice-Chancellor Mr. Lynn Boone. Zone 4 will be represented by Phillips County Chamber of Commerce Director and former Central High School Teacher Doug Friedlander. Zone 5 will be represented by retired Central High School Teacher Bettye Hendrix. Zone 7 will be represented by PCCUA Instructor Nathan Andrew Bagley. Zones 3 and 6 will remain vacant for the time being.
The Arkansas Board of Education also named an advisory board for the Pulaski County Special School District at Monday's meeting.
