Fire at Beech and Porter; One Dead

Helena-West Helena-AR-- According to unofficial reports, there was a fire at the old Poplar Manor apartments during the pre-dawn hours yesterday morning. Helena-West Helena Fire Department officials and staff responded to the fire and we on hand for quite some time. The body of a young African-American Male was removed from the burning building and pronounced dead by the Office of Mr. Earnest Larry, Phillips County Coroner.

The young man body is being sent to the Arkansas State Medical Examiner's Office for determination of the cause of death. His family has been notified and was called upon to identify the remains. This matter remains under investigation by local law enforcement officials.

The investigation is likely to reveal whether the young man died in the fire or was killed and placed at the scene of a fire in an attempted cover up. As details become available, we will update this story.
