Sylvan Hills 33 Cougars 14


SHERWOOD- Sylvan Hills (3-4, 2-2) scored 26 unanswered points to thwart an upset bid by the Helena-West Helena Central Cougars (1-6, 0-4) for a 33-14 victory at Bill Blackwood Field.

The Bear defense would make the first big play for Sylvan Hills when they stopped a 10-play Cougar drive at the Sylvan Hills 18-yard line on the games on possession.

Tra Doss scored on the ensuing possession when he broke free on a 30-yard touchdown run to cap off a 10-lay, 82 yard drive.  Phillip Wood kicked the PAT to put the Bears ahead 7-0 with 6:12 to play in the opening quarter.

Helena-West Helena responded with an 8-play, 65-yard drive of their own.  Quarterback Curly Brewer hit Delane Bedford for a 44-yard scoring pass with 0:59 to go in the first quarter.  Brewer threw to Sandy Wright for the two-point conversion and the Cougars led 8-7.

After the teams swapped punts, Sylvan Hills regained the lead with 6:57 to go in the first quarter when Jacob Wathall socored on a 39-yard run to cap off a 3-play, 46 yard drive.  The PAT failed and the Bears held a precarious 13-8 lead.

The Cougars made their first mistake of the game on the ensuing possession when the Bears recovered a Helena-West Helena fumble at the Cougar 28-yard line.  Four plays later, Doss scored on a 10-yard touchdown run with 4:41 to go in the first half.  Wood’s PAT was good, making the score 20-8.

Sylvan Hills extended the lead on the opening possession of the second half when Ashton Brown scored from 11 yards out to cap off a 5-play, 68 yard drive.  The try for two failed and Sylvan Hills led 26-8.

The Bears got their final points with 6:32 to go in the game when Kylan Wade scored on a 1-yard run set up by the Cougars turning the ball over on downs at their own 18-yard line.  Wood kicked the PAT to make the lead 33-8.

The Cougars scored on the last play of the game when Quarterback Malik Arnett threw to Keith Hays who passed to Bedford down the sideline for a 52-yard scoring reception to make the final scored 33-14.
