PA 43 Helena-West Helena 8

BY ANDREW BAGLEY

HELENA-WEST HELENA-Pulaski Academy (3-2, 2-0) piled up 36 points while scoring on all but one possession in the first half on their way to a 43-8 victory over the Helena-West Helena Central Cougars (1-4, 0-2) at Cad Polk Stadium.

The Bruins took the opening possession of the game 65 yards on ten plays.  Jairus Porter scored on a 17 yard touchdown run.  Wilson Tharp passed to Kyle Whelpley for the two-point conversion to make the score 8-0 with 9:54 left in the first quarter.

After forcing the Cougars to turn the ball over on downs, the Bruins quickly scored again when Quarterback Lawson Vassar hit Hunter Henry from 1-yard away with 6:23 to go in the first quarter.  George Friedmann kicked the PAT to put PA ahead 15-0.

The Bruins only needed 19 seconds to put more points on the board.  After Whelpley stripped the ball from the Cougars, Vassar hit Jalen Seals for a 31-yard touchdown pass.  Friedmann's PAT made the score 22-0 with 6:04 to go.

After forcing the Cougars to punt, the Bruins would add one more score in the first quarter by going on a 12-play, 97 yard drive.  Vassar hooked up with Daniel Vogel for the touchdown from eight yards away with 27.4 seconds to go in the first quarter.  Friedmann nailed the PAT to make the score 29-0 in favor of the Bruins.

The Bruins picked off an errant Cougar pass on the next possession and turned that turnover into points by going on a 4-play, 65-yard drive.  Vassar hit L. J. Wallace for a 6-yard touchdown pass.  Friedmann kicked the PAT to make it 36-0 with 7:27 to go in the first half.

With the mercy rule in effect the entire second half, each team would score one time.  Helena-West Helena took the first possession of the second half 69 yards on six plays.  Keith Hays scored on a 36-yard touchdown run with 8:16 to go in the third.  Delane Bedford ran in the two-point conversion to cut the lead to 36-8.

The Bruins rounded out the scoring with Will Hefley hit Will Hastings on a 7-yard scoring toss to cap off a 7-play, 66-yard drive.  Hastings kicked the PAT to make the final margin 43-8.

Up next for the Cougars is a matchup against the Lions of LR McClellan next Friday at Cad Polk Stadium.  Kickoff is at 7:00 pm.  The game can be heard on the radio at KCLT 104.9 FM, part of the Delta Force 3 network of stations.
